"The Fifth Mystery"
August 2006
Size of the new light: 1000mm x 1000mm
Design: Pendle Stained Glass Ltd./Deborah Lowe, based on 4 original panels.
The new backlit stained glass panel

'The Fifth mystery', a backlit stained glass window and lightbox commissioned to match
a set of four Victorian panels.
The lightbox was constructed from hardwood and backlit using daylight balanced fluorescent tubes.

The panel depicts the moment when Mary and Joseph, searching for their son,
find him in the temple talking with the elders.
The twelve year-old Jesus stands to address the priests who gather around Him to listen
(two figures on the left of the panel and one seated at the base, an open book on his knee).
The temple scene is set by the cloth draped altar behind Jesus and the incense thurible hanging above.
Mary and Joseph are shown arriving at the temple (on the right), both displaying surprise and relief.
Handmade glass was used throughout in colours to match and complement the existing four panels (shown below).
Decorative elements such as borders, background etc., the clothing and faces of the figures are echoed with the
fine detailed style of the originals.
