On-going project to restore glazing
1998 to present day
Conservation Architect – Lloyd Evans Prichard
We are currently in the final phases of the extensive restoration of the stained glass in this important church. Designed by J. A. Hansom and opened in 1871 the architecture is of the highest quality in design and materials throughout. It houses superb examples of stained glass. We have included in the thumbnails the South Transept window by the artist and craftsman Paul Woodruff (1920's). There are also hundreds of square metres of quarry windows.
Many of the stained glass windows around the church were in need of re-leading and had sustained breakages and loss. With a project on this immense scale methodical record keeping is vital. The glass was gently cleaned and documented before restoration. Important pieces (such as heads or hands) with cracks were edge bonded and plated. Missing pieces were recreated with special attention paid to matching the glass, pigment and painting style.
